A diagnostic check revealed no fault codes and in the end it was simply changing the oil that fixed the problem. The car had done 58000 kilometres without having a gearbox oil change!

I didn't realize you could pull the key apart that much, remove the chip from the rubber buttons. Strangely enough, I've had my keys apart a few times, even turning one into a flip key (you buy the empty flip key shell from ebay, then put your buttons into it and get the key cut) and I've never tho...

The car's receiver is behind the passenger side front fender...according to the diagram in the workshop manual...though that might mean it's actually next to the fuse box in the engine bay...but that's the area anyway. I would think it's worn contacts in the key's electronics. May have to completely...
