Was thinking of trying to make a space saver sub box out of fibre glass etc that slots under the side shelf in the boot so i can try and get some boot space back. Kind of like the one that sold on here a week or so ago (Damn me for being too slow to buy it!)

Just wondering if anyone has attempted this and if so how hard was it / what sort of cost would it involve to get the materials? If anyone has any pics of a nice one they've done could they post them for me so I can steal some ideas...

Thanks.

I've nearly finished mine. In the process of covering it at the moment.
Fits snug under the parcel shelf holder.

Have you used fibreglass before?

Never.....thats my main worry. When you ask the shops how much to make one though i think its worth learning for cos they want a lot... How did it turn out, how long did it take you etc? Got any pics?

I'd never used fibreglass before this. It was part of the reason I decided to give it a go.
In my limited experience, I found it fairly easy to use.

I've just finished mine ill post up some pics tonight or tomorrow. Its for a 12" sub, fits nicely under the parcel tray support. It's 40L in volume and sounds great. :)
Fibreglassing isnt too hard, its mainly messy rather than hard. I would suggest being well prepared, cover anything that you dont want to get resin on. Make sure u mix the resin and catalyst right, have the glass mat cut into small sections/strips before you start.
With glass you can work in small sections at a time. Dont feel like you have to do it all in one hit. Do as much as you need to inside the car to get the general form, then take it out and build up the layers when its out of the car, much easier!

hey mate,
I took some pics of my install on the weekend as promised. Im not 100% happy with the trimming on the back of the seats, I might have to look at other options for that. Now i just need a parcel tray to finish it off :)

thanks mate.
No im not doing one for the other side. It sounds good with just one sub. its a daily driver and i use the boot a bit, so i dont want to fill it up too much more.

Thanks Mate

That looks really neat and pretty much what Im after i think. What do you think the final cost would have been roughly? How long did it take you to build?

no worries mate.
it prob cost under $100 to make i think. in terms of time, it dragged out a bit for me because i didnt have a lot of time, but i did the main glass work in about 2-3 hours one day, then an hour here and there cutting and trimming bits and pieces. Id say about 10 hours in total.

Cheers Mike

Wow, that looks professional.

Loving the lipped edge to give a nice clean fit as well.

I worked it out roughly when I started cutting up the materials. Should come to around 35 litres.

I'll work it out properly and let you know when I get back from my holiday.

I'm just in the process of trying to work out how to make mine fit behind the passenger side rear wheel arch.
I have never used fibreglass so this is completely new to me.
Have you masked off the space in the car than laid on the fibreglass for a perfect fit.
I need 20lt sealed volume.
Would yo be able to give some dims on yours.
My car is missing the rear shelf so I was going to make a matching box for both sides the will create new pacel shelf supports without the raised curve at the rear window.
Its this or one that drops in the centre of the spare wheel and a false boot floor.
I would preffer it all to be very discrete as its not for show I just want some descent sounds, and the idea of being able to remove for track days is on my wish list also.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Looks neat and clean. How much liters of space you have saves. I too will follow your idea, but should not be heavy on my pocket.

if you dont mind losing the spare wheel i can scan the pages of an old sm mag that details how to make a sub box that fits the spare wheel well. dunno if it will suit a swift, ultra stealth tho and maximum boot space.
people put their crap upgrades here.
Didn't put a pod filter in. Didn't put in a second battery. Didn't install a s**t body kit.
Cleaned some stuff, replaced tired bushes and worn interior parts.

For a 15" sub you'll want to use 16mm MDF.

I wouldn't expect to have much space left in the luggage area when you're done though!

Depends on the sub doesn't it! Some are designed to work with as little as 20 liters. Or better yet, convert your spare wheel well into a sun enclosure!
